Science Resources Online for Young Children - Animals and Insects

Dinodon - This is a great site for the dinosaur enthusiast. Written by a dinosaur expert, this site has a great collection of dinosaur drawings showing the main features of each dinosaur. Dino trivia, interesting facts, videos, and more!

Frog So Nice - This is a great site for the frog lover. It has froggy pictures, sounds, songs (lyrics and chords only, sound for only 1 song) and tales, as well as "Scientific Amphibian" (the most scientific part of the site) and Famous Frogs.

Insects - In the author's words, "This site aims to help you really see insects for the miniature marvels they represent and to understand how intertwined our cultures have become with these alien creatures." There are four main sections to the site of which Entophiles is the most interesting for our age group. Entophiles consists of stunning close-ups of a wide range of insects plus informative descriptions. The descriptions are not really tailored for children unless they are very serious about insects. I'd recommend looking at this together with your child and explaining the more difficult terms.

Nature Sound - On this website you can hear sounds made by a multitude of birds and frogs while looking at a large photo of that animal.

Switch Zoo - Here the emphasis is on fun rather than education. If you want to see what a lion would look like with ostrich legs and hummingbird's wings, this is the site for you! Lots of fun, a wide variety of animals to play switcheroo with, and kids can also learn the differences between the body parts of various animals.

This website was created by Jennifer Claro as a requirement for the graduate course Internet Resources and Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, Canada. Last updated August 13, 2004.
